Theseus and the Minotaur
thousands of years ago, the island of Crete was ruled by a famous king named Minos. Those were times of prosperity and wealth. The power of the sovereign spread over many islands in the Aegean and other people had great respect for the Cretans. Minos
had many years in government when he received the terrible news of the death of his son. He had been murdered in Athens. His anger was immediate. Met the army and declared war against the Athenians.
Athens, at that time was still a small town and could not cope with the army of Minos. So he sent his envoys to agree to peace with the king of Crete. Minos received them and told them not to destroy Athens, but accepted that they must comply with a condition: to send fourteen young people, seven men and seven women, the island of Crete, to be thrown to the Minotaur. The palace
Minos had a huge maze, with hundreds of rooms, halls and galleries. It was so great that if anyone came in he never found out. Labyrinth lived the Minotaur, a monster with a bull head and human body. Each new moon, the Cretans had to place a man in the maze for the devouring monster. If they did, went outside and filled the island of death and pain.
When they learned of the condition Minos put the Athenians were shaken. They had no alternative. If refused, the Cretans destroy the city and many die. While all lamented, the king's son, the brave Theseus stepped forward and offered to be one of the young people who travel to Crete.
The ship carrying the young Athenians had black candles in mourning for the dark fate that awaited the crew. Theseus agreed with his father, King Aegeus of Athens, that if he could defeat the Minotaur, would hoist white sails. Thus the king would know what luck had run his son.
In Crete, young people were staying in a house waiting for the day when the first one was thrown to the Minotaur. During those days, Theseus met Ariadne, Minos's eldest daughter. Ariadne fell for him and decided to help kill the monster and out of the maze. So given a magic sword and a ball wire that was attached to the entry and unwind on the way to find out then.
Ariadne Theseus asked her to promise that if he could kill the Minotaur, then take her with him to Athens, as the King would never forgive him have helped him.
came the day that the first Athenian should be given to the Minotaur. Theseus asked to be he who march to the maze. Once there, he tied one end of the ball to a stone and began to go slowly through the halls and galleries. Each step increased the darkness. The silence was complete until it suddenly began to hear in the distance like a snorting bull. The noise was increasing.
For a moment he felt like Theseus escape. But he overcame his fear and entered a large room. There was the Minotaur. It was so terrible and terrifying as I had never imagined. Its full of anger roars were deafening. When the monster rushed on Theseus, this might stab the sword. The Minotaur fell to the ground. Theseus had conquered.
When Theseus managed to recover, took the ball and headed toward the entrance. There he hoped Ariadne, who received him with a hug. Upon learning of the death of the Minotaur, King Minos young Athenians allowed to return home. Before he sailed, Theseus Ariadne secretly introduced into the boat, to fulfill their promise. She said her sister is Phaedra, who did not want to separate from her sister.
The return trip was complicated. A storm drove them to an island. It lost Ariadne and, despite all efforts, could not find it. The Athenians, with Phaedra, continued to travel to their town. When Ariadne, who had fainted, she recovered, ran to the shore and shouted with all his might, but the ship was far away.
Theseus, upset and sad about what happened to Ariadne, forgot to hoist the white sails. King Aegeus went every day to the seaside to see if the ship returned. When he saw the black sails he thought his son had died. Of sadness and did not want to live and fell from a height into the sea. Theseus was greeted as a hero in Athens. The Athenians made him king of Athens, Theseus took to wife Phaedra.
